Top Tips to Save Energy

How can I save 10% of my energy bill? *
* Reference – Eskom Connect – Issue 1 - 2009

1.
Switch off lights that are not in use, especially in offices or at home, and try to switch to low-energy CFL bulbs.
2.
Turn off Geysers after breakfast, and switch them back on at bedtime. Another idea is to install a geyser blanket, and reduce the setting on your thermostat to 60C, insulate your hot water pipes, and try to conserve usage of heated water.
3.
Use a pressure cooker to save energy when preparing food which requires a long time to cook. Buy a stove with a convection oven, and keep the oven doors closed until food is cooked. Bring water and food to boil on the high setting, but remember to switch down to a lower setting, and allow food to simmer until ready. Always make sure your stove plate reflectors are clean, and make sure that pots and pans are placed on the correct size hot plate, to ensure optimum efficiency.
4.
Keep the Refrigerator door closed, and only open for as little time as is necessary. Turn off the refrigerator when you leave on vacation, store foods apart from each other, and make sure food has cooled down before storing in the fridge. Most importantly, ensure that you regularly defrost your fridge, for optimum performance.
5.
IR heaters work far more efficiently than traditional models and you can save energy by making the switch. Oil heaters are low on energy and high on safety!
6.
Electric blankets use less energy then hot water bottles, but make sure you turn yours off when you go to bed at night!
7.
Always ensure that your dishwasher is carrying its capacity before using, turn the machine off during the drying cycle, and wipe dishes with a warm dry cloth. Ensure your dishwasher is connected to the cold water supply, and clean the filters regularly.
8.
Save on energy, and leave food to defrost in the fridge the night before, rather then using a micro-wave. It is better to cook large quantities of meat in a conventional oven, rather then using a microwave.
9.
Front Loading Washing Machines use less water and cost less to operate than other models. Use the warm water setting to cut down on energy usage, and make sure you have a full load before washing.
10.
Install a tumble dryer that has an electronic humidity control, because they automatically turn off the unit when it is finished. Use the correct temperature settings and make sure to remove as much water as possible, before loading the dryer. On sunny days, use the sun to dry your clothes outside.
11.
Insulate the ceiling and seal air gaps in the home to save on heating costs. Make use of the homes material to adjust temperature, rather then using a heater or an AC unit. For instance, concrete floors absorb heat faster then a carpeted floor.
12.
Use a kettle rather then boiling water on the stove. It’s quicker and it uses less energy. Only boil the amount of water you really need, and cut down on wastage!
